The Executive Committee of International Corrosion Council is sad to announce the passing away of Prof. Vladimír Číhal on November 11, 2025 at the age of 96.
Professor Číhal was a globally recognized expert in the field of corrosion and corrosion protection and a receipent of the International Corrosion Councl’is Prestigious Marcel Pourbaix Award in 2002. He published numerous professional papers and reports and was the author and co-author of several books that are fundamental professional resources in the field. His monograph Intergranular Corrosion of Steels and Alloys has been translated into several languages, including English and Russian, and is frequently cited.
Professor Číhal worked as a researcher at the State Research Institute for Material Protection in Prague (SVUOM), but he was also involved in teaching. For many years, he worked at the Faculty of Materials Engineering at VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava, where he also served as head of the Department of Materials Engineering. He has long been involved in research into the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) method, which he developed during his internship in France in the late 1960s. In 2006, this method was standardized as an ISO standard. Professor Číhal received numerous awards both in the Czech Republic and abroad, for the most significant scientists in the field of corrosion from the European Federation for Corrosion (EFC) Award for lifetime scientific contribution, and the Milan Prazak Award from the Czech and Slovak Association of Corrosion Engineers (AKI) for significant and long-term contributions in the field of corrosion engineering and corrosion protection.
On behalf of our entire professional community, International Corrosion Council expresses its deepest condolences to his family.
